I remember when I was only four,
Mother would bring me round to the store.
And just outside of church she’d stand,
And “Come in,” she’d say, reaching down for my hand.
“Just for a minute.”
And then when I started going to school,
She’d bring me down everyday as a rule,
But first the steps to the church we’d climb,
And she’d say, “We’ll go in—you’ve always got time,
Just for a minute.”
Then I got real big, I mean seven years old.
And I went by myself but was always told,
“When you’re passing by the church don’t forget to call,
And tell Our Lord about lessons and all,
Just for a minute.”
And now it’s sort of habit I got
In the evening coming from Casey’s lot,
Though it takes me out of my way a bit,
To slip into church with my ball and mitt,
Just for a minute.
But sometimes I see the other fellow
Standing around and I just go yellow.
I pass by the door but a voice from within
Seems to say, real sad, “So you wouldn’t come in-
Just for a minute.”
There are things inside of me, bad and good,
That nobody knows and nobody could, excepting
Our Lord, and I like him to know,
And he helps me when in for a visit I go,
Just for a minute.
He finds it lonesome when nobody comes.
(There are hours upon hours when nobody comes),
And He’s pleased when anyone passing by
Stops in, though it’s only a little guy,
Just for a minute.
I know what happens when people die,
But I won’t be scared and I’ll tell you why;
When Our Lord is judging my soul, I feel,
He’ll remember the times I went in to kneel.,
Just for a minute.
We should visit the Blessed Sacrament often, even daily if possible. If the churches are locked, then park outside and place yourself in spirit before Our Lord Jesus in the tabernacle, and say a few prayers to him. You can’t see him but he can see you. How many thousands of Catholics daily pass a church and are not even aware of his Real Presence. How sad he is to see the indifference of so many Catholics.
Jesus invites us, “Come to Me…I wait for you.’’ As Pope John Paul said, “He waits for us in this Sacrament of Love. Let us be generous in going to meet him.” Isaias says, “You shall draw waters with joy from the Saviour’s fountains.” Isaiah 12:3. St. Alphonsus says, “Oh! What torrents of grace have the saints drawn from their time spent with Jesus in the most Holy Sacrament.” But he also laments, “It must be confessed that Jesus Christ is unfortunate in his priests! All this comes from the little love they have for him. He that tenderly loves a friend, seeks to see him as often as he can, especially when his visits are most agreeable to this friend.”- Dignities and Duties of a Priest.
“Do you wish many graces? Visit the Blessed Sacrament often. Do you wish few graces? Visit it seldom. Visits to the Blessed Sacrament are a powerful means of overcoming the devil and increasing in virtue.” – St. John Bosco.
“Who is going to save the world.? The Savior of the world. Where is He? In the Blessed Sacrament. Go to him. Eucharistic adoration if the holiest of actions. There is nothing or greater on earth than this adoration.” – St. Peter Julian Eymard.
Do you wish to die a good death? Hear what St. Alphonsus says: “Certainly amongst all devotions, after that of receiving the sacraments, that of adoring Jesus in the Blessed Sacramentholds the first place, is the most pleasing to God, and the most useful to ourselves…Be assured that the time you will thus spend before this most divine sacrament will be the most profitable to you in life, and the source of your greatest consolation in death and in eternity. You must also be aware , that in a quarter of an hour’s prayer spent in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament, you will perhaps gain more than in all the other spiritual exercises of the day.”
“Sporting themselves to excess,” said St. Peter, 2 Peter 2:13. Games and sports have taken over the world, basketball, football, baseball, soccer, and so on. What a waste of time! Recreation is both good and useful, but what is St. Peter saying, “They’re doing it to excess.” Again we hear from St. Alphonsus: “Believe me, all is folly: feasts, theatres, parties of pleasure, amusements, – these are the goods of this world, but goods which are filled with the bitterness of gall and sharp thorns.”
For those who are unable to visit the Blessed Sacrament, they should follow the example of Blessed Alexandrina da Costa, who was bedridden and could not go. She would sleep with her face facing the church where Christ in the Blessed Sacrament was dwelling. When awake, she would go in spirit before the tabernacle and visit our Lord in spirit. They can often make spiritual Communions throughout the day.
Spiritual Communion
With a contrite and a pure and loving heart say: My Jesus, I believe that Thou are present in the Blessed Sacrament. I love Thee above all things and I desire to possess Thee within my soul. Since I cannot receive Thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. As though Thou were already there, I embrace Thee and unite myself wholly to Thee; permit me not that I should ever be separated from Thee.
O Sacrament most holy, O Sacrament divine, All praise and all thanksgiving, Be every moment Thine.
O Jesus, sweet Jesus, O Jesus divine, My life and my death unto Thee I resign. Every action of mine shall Thy patronage claim, for whatever I do, shall be done in Thy Name. Amen.
