Disease of the tongue: In the days of Father Paul of Moll, a saintly man, miracle worker and mystic, who lived from 1824 to 1896, we read of a man of Canaghem, who from a decayed tooth, contracted a most painful disease of the tongue. He wrote to Father Paul requesting a cure. The Father replied, “You may be cured if you cease to blaspheme: You have cancer of the tongue in punishment for your blasphemies.” So long as the man refrained from swearing, his condition daily improved; but as he unfortunately resumed his former evil habit, his malady increased, and death followed. This story doesn’t say whether he went to hell or not, but St. James said if we didn’t have a bridle on our tongue, our religion is vain. “And if any man think himself to be religious, not bridling his tongue, but deceiving his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.” 1:26. If our religion is vain when we die, where do you think we are going? “For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile.” 1 Peter 3:10.
Blocking God’s will: Following God’s will in life is the most important thing we can do for our salvation. “Not everyone that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.” St. Matthew 7:21. One of the worst things parents could do is to block the vocation of a child striving to follow God’s will, since doing God’s will is necessary for salvation, as Our Lord stated above. This one lady was punished by God for that very reason, opposing the vocation of her daughter: A lady one day asked Fr. Paul to cure her, and received the following answer: “You cannot be cured, because you are opposed to the vocation of your daughter, who desires to go to the convent.”
How oftentimes our sins are the cause of our punishment. Recall the story of the man who had been laid up for 38 years, and Jesus comes along and heals him, because he could never get in the pool before anyone else. Then Jesus finds him later and warns him, “Afterwards, Jesus findeth him in the temple, and saith to him: Behold thou art made whole: sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee.” St. John 5:14. “Lest some worse thing happen to thee.” The meaning here is that his former sin caused this long and painful illness, 38 years!
Leprosy, because it disfigures the body so bad, is a figure of mortal sin. “And Mary and Aaron spoke against Moses, because of his wife the Ethiopian,…The cloud also that was over the tabernacle departed: and behold Mary appeared white as snow with a leprosy.” Numbers 33. The evils of an evil tongue are punished. For God said, “For I speak to him mouth to mouth: and plainly, and not by riddles and figures doth he see the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak ill of my servant Moses?” All the damned in hell, demons and human souls are horribly disfigured because of their sins. If we could see what sin does to our souls, we would never want to sin again. Some souls by the providence of God, and for a certain reason, have appeared from hell or been seen in hell as most hideous persons. St. Leonard of Port Maurice relates the story of an adulterer who had been condemned to hell with his priest because the priest would absolve him without making him give up his sin. After they died the wife was shown a vision of her husband, and she did not recognize him because of his deformity, but he revealed to her that he was damned and the priest who was the cause of his damnation because he would not make him give up his sin when going to confession. Nowadays, the clergy are very guilty of allowing immodesty in the House of God and many sacrilegious Communions, contrary to the decree of Pope Pius XI, 1930. Confessing one’s mortal sins does not save us if we are not committed to giving up the sin. Some bad Catholics have said, “Oh! I’ll just commit this sin and then go to confession.” No, it doesn’t work that way. They run the risk of damnation as the adulterer did. “Let them keep my precepts, that they may not fall into sin, and die in the sanctuary, when they shall have defiled it. I am the Lord who sanctify them.” Leviticus 22:9
Negligence in going to confession: Four children of a boatman in Antwerp being sick, the father went to Father Paul. Father Paul said to him, “You did not go to confession in 7 years; and your wife not in 6. This is the cause of your children’s illness. Let both of you go to confession in Antwerp, and your children will recover their health.”
Bad and evil parents: A married couple came and complained to Father Paul that all their children had died. Father Paul told them, “You yourselves are the cause of their misfortune.” To the woman he said, “You ought to have given good example, and yet you have not been to confession for 12 years. And you,” he said to the husband, “have not been to confession in 20 years! What blessings can you expect under these circumstances? Enter into yourselves, be converted, then return and I will receive you with a generous heart.” “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all iniquity.”1 John 1:9. Another lady asked him to cure her, and he said, “First be converted, for I am ashamed to see you.”
When Our Lady of Fatima was asked to cure a certain man, she told Lucy, “Let him be converted first.” King David suffered very much from his sin. “Because I was silent my bones grew old; whilst I cried out all the day long. For day and night thy hand was heavy upon me: I am turned in my anguish, whilst the thorn is fastened. I have acknowledged my sin to thee, and my injustice I have not concealed. I said I will confess against myself my injustice to the Lord: and thou hast forgiven the wickedness of my sin.” Psalm 31. Sin has consequences. I knew a man who had bragged about having relations with six women. He had a terrible accident, and was crippled for life!
Sometimes our sins also affect our family, not only harming them spiritually and endangering their souls to hellfire, but also in this life. Parents who are more concerned with sports than they are of teaching their children the true faith, allowing them to have internet phones with all the filth corrupting their young souls. ” Receiving the reward of their injustice, counting for a pleasure the delights of a day: stains and spots, sporting themselves to excess, rioting in their feasts with you.” 2 Peter 2:13. They take their children to practice and all the ball games, but how often do they show up for daily Mass, and visits to the Blessed Sacrament?
It was related in a diocesan paper six couples who had 50 years anniversaries, a total of 300 years. All total, they only had eight children in 300 years! How many of them, and how many years had they been practicing birth control? Only eight children in 300 years combined. Father Robert Brown once told a friend, “Most Catholic couples are contracepting,” and the friend asked, “Why do you say that, Father?” And he replied, “No children.” Contraception is a mortal sin. God killed Onan for birth control because he did not want to raise up seed, Genesis 38:10. Father Leslie Rumble said, “The seriousness of the punishment shows the seriousness of the crime.” Ironically in the movie, Courageous, which is a great movie by the way, the father and mother only had two children, one 15 and the other nine. Sixteen years and only two children! What were they doing? The little girl gets killed in the movie. I have noted over the years that some couples who only have two or three children lose one. Pope Pius XI issued an encyclical on marriage, and in it he stated that the primary purpose of marriage is the begetting of children. 1. Do you ever hear your pastor informing you of these things, and warning against birth control?
“Let not thy mouth be accustomed to swearing: for in it there are many falls. And let not the naming of God be usual in thy mouth, and meddle not with the names of saints, for thou shalt not escape free from them…A man that sweareth much, shall be filled with iniquity, and a scourge shall not depart from his house.” Ecclesiasticus 23:9,10,12. All quotes are taken from the Douay Rheims bible, drbo.org. Here we see that if a man swears much, a scourge shall continually be on his house. A couple examples. One man used to take God’s Holy Name in vain a lot. His daughter died at age 12. Another man who did likewise lost his son in a car accident at age 16. “But if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.” Matthew 19:17.
There is a story of a young man in his youth who was very evil. A gentleman said of him one day after he saw him, “That’s one of the most evil men I’ve ever known.” A lady who knew him said he came to a church service one night and mocked the service. A young lady, 18 years of age, was dying in the hospital and he came to see her. Just to scare her, he told her, her intravenous tube had quit running. She died just a few weeks later of leukemia. That’s how evil he was. Many things could be said of him. What happened to him? Sorry to say, a jeep overturned on him in his twenties and killed him! Why do you think people who fornicate have so many venereal diseases? Sexually transmitted diseases? Because their chastisements are related to their sin. As it says in the title above, “That they might know that by what things a man sinneth, by the same also he is tormented. ” Wisdom 11:17. Deuteronomy 28 is loaded with chastisements for sinners who refuse to do God’s will, and they are terrible. These examples should cause all of us to fear and reflect. We should always pray to do God’s will in order to be saved. Scripture says, “The number of fools is infinite.” Eccles. 1:15. “Exceedingly numerous,” said St. Alphonsus. When we pray the Our Father, “Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven,” we should say it like we mean it. King David would often pray, “Teach me to do thy will, for thou art my God. Thy good spirit shall lead me into the right land.”Psalms 142:10. And St. Joseph, the Blessed Mother said, would often pray, “May the will of God ever be done in me.” Amen.
