Heretics as I say, have not a good word to say about the Blessed Mother. You can explain something to them as clear as a bell, and they will reject it. But we are bound to honor her for two reasons. 1) She is the Mother of God; 2) She is also our spiritual Mother. Most people are not familiar with the term of heretic. A heretic is one who denies one or more of the truths revealed by Jesus Christ. Since Our Lord has declared it, they make him a liar when they refuse to believe it. “He that believeth not the Son, maketh him a liar,” St John said, 1 John 5:10; and St. John said, “He that believeth not the Son, shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him.” John 3:36. Even if the say they believe in Jesus Christ and have accepted him as their Savior, they will still not be saved because they make him a liar. These heretics are false Christians. This is why St. Paul says a heretic is condemned, because he goes by his own judgement rather than the teaching of the Church. “A man that is a heretic, after the first and second admonition, avoid: Knowing that he, that is such an one, is subverted, and sinneth, being condemned by his own judgment.” Titus 3:10-11. This is why Jesus had such a strong condemnation of heretics, who have left the Catholic Church, and severed themselves from the truth. Martin Luther was a Catholic priest. He was a very immoral man, left the Church and became a heretic. Broke his vow of celibacy and married a nun, who also broke her vow of chastity. This is the founder of Lutheranism, a heretic and an immoral man. And he was condemned to hell as St. Paul said, because he went by his own judgement and thought he knew better than the Church which had been in existence now for almost 1500 years. So if you want to save your soul, you need to be in the true Church to get to heaven. As the Holy Bible says, those who were such as should be saved were added to the Church. “And the Lord increased daily together such as should be saved.” Acts 2:47. If you were going to another country, say Germany for example, you would make sure you got on the right plane, would you not? The same is true for the Church. Martin Luther and other heretics said the Church had failed. St. Francis de Sales said, “And to say the Church has failed—what else is it but to say that all our predecessors are damned? Yes, truly; for outside the true Church there is no salvation, out of this Ark every one is lost.” – THE CATHOLIC CONTROVERSY.
A false church which teaches false doctrine and denies certain truths revealed by Jesus Christ will not save you. There were no protestant churches back then in the early Church. If you wanted to be a Christian, you became a member of the Catholic Church.* The protestant churches have no unity. They say they can read the Bible and the Holy Ghost tells them its meaning. Since the Spirit is a spirit of unity, then why are there now thousands of protestant churches? This proves that the spirit does not speak to them individually for the Spirit does not contradict himself. This is why St. Peter warned that, “No prophecy of scripture is of any private interpretation.” 2 Peter 1:20; and that many interpret the scriptures to their own damnation, like Martin Luther: “Paul, according to the wisdom given him, hath written to you: As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are certain things hard to be understood, which the unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, to their own destruction.” 2 Peter 3:15-16. The unlearned and the unstable wrestle with the scriptures to their own destruction, that is, to their own damnation.
All of us need to be in the true Church for salvation, for Jesus Christ made his Church, “the pillar and ground of truth,” 1 Timothy 3:15; like a building held up by the foundation which is the ground, and the pillars, the supports. You take the Church away, like Martin Luther, and the truth falls. Moreover, Jesus Christ commands us to hear the Church or be as the heathen and the publican (public sinner). ‘’ And if he will not hear them: tell the church. And if he will not hear the church, let him be to thee as the heathen and publican.” St. Matthew 18:17. For those of you who do not understand this passage, theologians tell us it is a threat of damnation if we refuse to follow the Church. Another reason we need to be in the true Church. How would you feel if someone came to your house and showed respect to your father but had not a good word to say about your mother and shunned her all the while they were there? Would you not be greatly offended? Yet that’s the way protestants treat the Mother of Christ. They think they can go straight to Jesus without the help of her prayers, and Jesus is going to bless them after the many times they have offended him by their sins. This is not the way the saints taught. St. Ignatius of Antioch, died in the early second century giving up his life for Christ as a martyr said, “A devout client of Mary shall never perish.” St. Bonaventure said, “He who neglects the service of Our Lady will perish, and be damned in his sins.” Our Lady appeared to Sr. Lucy of Fatima in 1925 and she said to her, “There are many souls whom the justice of God condemns to hell for sins committed against me, that I have come to ask for reparation.” How do we expect to gain the favor of the Son when we insult his Blessed Mother? Remember what Jesus spoke to Mother Marianna, not only concerning himself but also his mother. “A thousand times cursed be those heretics and their followers, who place in doubt these mysteries concerning myself and my mother.” Many of the Scriptures in the Old Testament apply to her. ‘’ He that shall find me, shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord.” [Proverbs 8:35]. ‘’ He that shall find me, shall find life, and shall have salvation from the Lord.” [Proverbs 8:36].
A protestant recently said, “I see no place in the Bible where it says we should pray to Mary.” Okay. And I see no place in the Bible where it says NOT to pray to the Blessed Mother. What I do see in the Bible is Mary interceding for a couple, telling him, “They have no wine,” and Jesus tells her, “My hour is not yet come.” Yet, even though his hour had not yet come, he fulfills her desire to help the couple when the wine runs short, and he changes the water into the best wine. Who was it who went to Jesus looking for help? It was his mother, and even though his hour had not yet come, he changed the course of history because she desired him to help. That’s pretty powerful. Even though his hour had not yet come, he answers her prayer for them, because He never refuses her prayer on behalf of souls. St. Bridget once had a vision of Jesus in heaven speaking to His mother, and He said to her, “Ask of me whatever you will, and I will refuse you nothing. There are countless stories and testimonies of Mary’s intercession for her children. Many stories of her powerful protection to those who pray the rosary everyday. Her second promise in the rosary promises, she promises special protection to them and the greatest graces. “It is narrated by Father Bovius,[175] of a very sinful person named Helen, that having gone to church, she accidentally heard a sermon on the rosary. As she went out she bought one, but carried it hidden, so that it should not be seen. Afterwards, she began to recite it; and although she recited it without devotion, the most holy Virgin infused into her heart such consolation and sweetness in it, that she could not cease repeating it. And by this she was inspired with such a horror of her evil life, that she could find no peace, and was forced, as it were, to go to confession. She confessed with so much contrition, that the confessor was amazed. Having finished her confession, she went immediately before an altar of the blessed Virgin, to thank her advocate; she recited her rosary, and the divine mother spoke to her from her image, and said: “Helen, you have too long offended God and me; henceforth change your life, and I will bestow[88] upon you many of my favors.” The poor sinner, in confusion, answered: “Ah, most holy Virgin, it is true that hitherto I have been very sinful, but thou, who art all-powerful, assist me; I give myself to thee, and will pass the remainder of my life in doing penance for my sins.” Assisted by Mary, Helen bestowed all her goods upon the poor, and commenced a rigorous penance. She was tormented by dreadful temptations, but she continued to recommend herself to the mother of God; and always, with her aid, came off victorious. She was favored also with many supernatural graces, as visions, revelations, and prophecies. At last, before her death, of which she had been warned a few days previously by Mary, the Virgin herself came with her Son to visit her; and in death, the soul of this sinner was seen, in the form of a beautiful dove, ascending to heaven.
St. Philip Neri always admonished his penitents by saying to them: My children, if you desire perseverance, be devout to Mary. The venerable brother John Berchmans, of the Company of Jesus, also said: He who loves Mary, shall have perseverance. The reflection which Rupert the Abbot makes upon the prodigal son is very beautiful. If the mother of this prodigal son had been living, he would either never have left his father’s house, or would have returned much sooner.[196][96] And by this he wished to say, that he who is a child of Mary, either never departs from God, or if for his misfortune he departs, by means of Mary he quickly returns.
Oh, if all men loved this most kind and loving Lady, and in temptations always and immediately had recourse to her, who would fall? Who would be lost? He falls and is lost who does not flee to Mary. St. Lawrence Justinian applies to Mary these words of Ecclesiasticus: “I have walked in the waves of the sea;”[197] and makes her to say: I walk with my servants in the midst of the tempests to which they are exposed, to assist them, and prevent them from falling into the precipice of sin.[198]
Father Bernardine de Bustis relates that a hawk darted upon a bird which had been taught to say Ave Maria (Hail Mary); the bird said Ave Maria, and the hawk fell dead. By this our Lord wished to show us, that if an irrational bird was saved from destruction by invoking Mary, how much more surely will he be prevented from falling into the power of evil spirits, who is mindful to invoke Mary in his temptations.” – St. Alphonsus, THE GLORIES OF MARY.
Almighty God gave His Blessed Mother all the dignity, greatness, and holiness necessary to make her his most loving, perfect Mother. Also, she is truly our spiritual Mother by adoption. As children when in trouble run to their mothers for help, so ought we to run at once with unbounded confidence to Mary. St. Bernard and many saints said that it was never, never heard at any time or in any place that Mary refused to hear the prayers of her children on earth. Why do we not realize this most consoling truth? Why refuse the love and consolation that God’s loving Mother is offering us? There is no one after Jesus who loves us so much. There is no one, not even the greatest martyr who ever suffered for Christ, nay I say, there is no one who suffered so much for us after Christ for our salvation. “Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up those things that are wanting (lacking) of the sufferings of Christ, in my flesh, for his body, which is the Church.” Col. 1:24.
What mother had to see her son in a garden sweating blood for the sins of others? What mother ever had to see her son loaded with ropes and chains ( because they thought he was a magician and might escape), when they took Jesus prisoner, and beaten and dragged as they led him along to be unjustly judged and falsely accused by three godless judges, condemned to the most horrific scourging that any man ever went through, all the while being entirely innocent? So much so that His body one was great mass of wounds from top to bottom. Isaias said, “From the sole of the foot unto the top of the head, there is no soundness therein: wounds and bruises and swelling sores: they are not bound up, nor dressed, nor fomented with oil.,” 1:6. What mother ever had to witness her son being unjustly condemned and treated as a mock king with a crown of thorns mashed into his head? What mother ever had to see her son unjustly condemned as a criminal in place of a notorious criminal like Barrabas? What mother ever had to watch her Son so weak and injured he should not even be alive, carry a great cross on his shoulders a long distance up a hill, falling many times along the way? And what poor mother had to stand by and watch them drive big spike nails into her son’s hands and feet, and stand by her son’s cross, not sit, stand for three long agonizing hours watching her son die. There was no morphine for this poor Son Jesus as he went through all these terrible sufferings. No other mother in the whole wide world ever had to witness such atrocious sufferings to their son, but Mary did, and much more. And protestants have the gall to say she was no more than any other woman, and have hardly a good word to say about her because we Catholics love and honor her so much. Apocalypse or Revelation chapter 12 says St. John saw a woman in great labor to bring forth a son. This son will rule them with an iron rod. How do we know this son is Jesus? Because Psalm chapter two God the Father is speaking of His Son who “will rule them with an iron rod.” The times we have offended God in just 10 yearsLord hath said to me: Thou art my son, this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I will give thee the Gentiles for thy inheritance, and the utmost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt rule them with a rod of iron…” Therefore, if the Son is Christ, the woman is Mary. But why is she in labor, because she suffered no pain giving birth to Christ? Because she is suffering His body, which is the Church, and its members, all of whom are sinners. Ephesians chapter 1 and 5. Revelations goes on to say that the dragon is angry with the woman, and goes off to make war with the rest of her seed, who have the testimony of Jesus Christ, and keep the commandments of God, verse 17. So if you are a Christian, you are of the seed of Mary and she is your spiritual Mother, and as such, you should call on her for help, asking her prayers and praying the rosary every day. If you say, “I don’t need Mary’s prayers. I can go straight to Jesus,” You might want to rethink that. The Bible says the just man sins seven times a day, and the wicked even more: ‘’ For a just man shall fall seven times and shall rise again: but the wicked shall fall down into evil.” [Proverbs 24:16]. Now consider this. If we sin just seven times a day, times 365 times 10, that comes to an incredible 25,550 in just 10 years! This is the judge you are offending, and you are going to just march up and ask him to forgive you without a good lawyer. Apparently you do not have a good intention of amendment after offending him thousands of times. What earthly judge would you do that to?
Yes, Jesus is merciful, but he’s also just. He himself said, praying to his Father, “Just Father, the world has not know Thee.” St. John John 17:25. St. Leonard of Port Maurice said on this verse that we do not know the justice of God. St. Alphonsus said, “God is merciful. Who denies it? But God cannot pardon the determination of sin, and how many are cast into hell every day.” – PREPARATION FOR DEATH. If your spouse or your children, or a friend offended you 50 times in a week, would you be inclined to listen to them? Therefore, just as we need an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, we also need an advocate with the Son, who is Mary His Blessed Mother. And if anyone thinks he is going to find mercy with Jesus the judge by spurning His Mother, it’s not going to happen. The saints will tell you otherwise. St. Bonaventure said, “Whoever neglects the service of Our Lady will perish and die in his sins.” St. Ildephonsus said, “He who attempts to go to God in prayer without Mary attempts to fly without wings.” Is it our lamentable ignorance which deprives us of such help and consolation? To love and trust Mary is to be happy on earth now and afterwards to be happy in heaven. Dr. Hugh Lammer was a staunch Protestant, with strong prejudices against the Catholic Church. One day he found an explanation of the Hail Mary and read it. He was so charmed with it that he began to say it daily. Insensibly all his anti-Catholic animosity began to disappear. He became a Catholic, a holy priest, and a Professor of Theology in Breslau.
A priest was called to the bedside of a man who was dying in despair because of his sins. Yet he refused obstinately to go to confession. As a last recourse the priest asked him to say at least the Hail Mary, after which the poor man made a sincere confession and died a holy death. Another case in England, a parish priest was asked to go and see a Protestant lady who was gravely ill, and who wished to become a Catholic. Asked if she had ever gone to a Catholic church, or, if she had spoken to Catholics, or if she had read Catholic books, she replied, “No, no.” All she could remember was that—when a child—she had learned from a little Catholic neighbor girl the Hail Mary, which she said every night. She was baptized and before dying, had the happiness of seeing her husband and children baptized. St. Gertrude tells us in her book, “Revelations,” that when we thank God for the graces He has given to any saint, we get a share of those particular graces. What graces then, do we not receive, when we say the Hail Mary, while thanking Jesus for all the unspeakable graces He has given to His Mother ?
