The Hail Mary of a Protestant – A True Story

A little six-year-old Protestant boy had often heard his Catholic companions reciting the prayer “Hail Mary.” He liked it so much that he copied it, memorized it and would recite it every day. “Look, Mommy, what a beautiful prayer,” he said to his mother one day. “Never again say it,” answered the mother. “It is a superstitious prayer of Catholics who adore idols and think Mary a goddess. After all, she is a woman like any other. Come on, take this Bible and read it. It contains everything that we are bound to do and have to do.” From that day on the little boy discontinued his daily “Hail Mary” and gave himself more time to reading the Bible instead. So one day, while reading the Gospel, he came across the passage about the Annunciation of the Angel to Our Lady. Full of joy, the little boy ran to his mother and said: “Mommy, I have found the ‘Hail Mary’ in the Bible which says: ‘Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee, blessed art thou amongst women.’ Why do you call it a superstitious prayer?”

On another occasion he found that beautiful Salutation of St. Elizabeth to the Virgin Mary and the wonderful canticle MAGNIFICAT in which Mary foretold that “the generations would call her blessed.” He said no more about it to his mother but started to recite the “Hail Mary” every day as before. He felt pleasure in addressing those charming words to the Mother of Jesus, our Savior. When he was fourteen, he one day heard a discussion on Our Lady among the members of his family. Every one said that Mary was a common woman like any other woman. The boy, after listening to their erroneous reasoning could not bear it any longer, and full of indignation, he interrupted them, saying:

“Mary is not like any other children of Adam, stained with sin. No! The Angel called her FULL OF GRACE AND BLESSED AMONGST WOMEN. Mary is the Mother of Jesus Christ and consequently Mother of God. There is no higher dignity to which a creature can be raised. The Gospel says that the generations will proclaim her blessed and you are trying to despise her and look down on her. Your spirit is not the spirit of the Gospel or of the Bible which you proclaim to be the foundation of the Christian religion.” So deep was the impression which the boy’s talk had made that his mother many times cried out sorrowfully: “Oh my God! I fear that this son of mine will one day join the Catholic religion, the religion of Popes!” And indeed, not very long afterwards, having made a serious study of both Protestantism and Catholicism, the boy found the latter to be the only true religion and embraced it and became one of its most ardent apostles.

The Hail Mary cures his sister’s son who is deathly ill.

Sometime after his conversion, he met his married sister who rebuked him and said indignantly: “You little know how much I love my children. Should any one of them desire to become a Catholic, I would sooner pierce his heart with a dagger than allow him to embrace the religion of the Popes!”

Her anger and temper were as furious as those of St. Paul before his conversion. However, she would change her ways, just as St. Paul did on his way to Damascus. It so happened that one of her sons fell dangerously ill and the doctors gave up hope of recovery. Her brother then approached her and spoke to her affectionately, saying: “My dear sister, you naturally wish to have your child cured. Very well, then, do what I ask you to do. Follow me, let us pray one ‘Hail Mary’ and promise God that, if your son recovers his health, you would seriously study the Catholic doctrine, and should you come to the conclusion that Catholicism is the only true religion, you would embrace it no matter what the sacrifices may be.”

His sister was somewhat reluctant at the beginning, but as she wished for her son’s recovery, she accepted her brother’s proposal and recited the “Hail Mary” together with him. The next day her son was completely cured. The mother fulfilled her promise and she studied the Catholic doctrine. After long preparation she received Baptism together with her whole family, thanking her brother for being an apostle to her. The story was related during a sermon given by the Rev. Fr. Tuckwell. “Brethren,” he went on and said, “the boy who became a Catholic and converted his sister to Catholicism dedicated his whole life to the service of God. He is the priest who is speaking to you now! What I am I owe to Our Lady. You, too, my dear brethren, be entirely dedicated also to Our Lady and never let a day pass without saying the beautiful prayer, ‘Hail Mary’, and your Rosary. Ask her to enlighten the minds of Protestants who are separated from the true Church of Christ founded on the Rock (Peter) and ‘against whom the gates of hell shall never prevail.” www.olrl.org/stories/

When we pray the Hail Mary, we bless both Mother and Son, as Elizabeth did after she was filled with he Holy Ghost, St. Luke 1:41-42. We are part of Mary’s prophecy where she said, “From henceforth all generations shall call me blessed,” each time we pray the Hail Mary. We salute her in the beginning as the angel did when he was sent by God to her, St. Luke 1:27-28. Thus, the first two parts of the Hail Mary are in Scripture. St. Luke 1:28: Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou among women. St. Luke 1:42: Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Jesus is the fruit of Mary. Therefore we go to the tree to get the fruit. St. Louis de Montfort says, “He who wishes to have the fruit of life, Jesus Christ, must have the tree of life, which is Mary.” Scripture tells us that the spiritual world is seen by the visible. Therefore, as in the order of nature you go to the tree to get the fruit, so also in the order of grace you go to Mary to receive Jesus, the fruit of life. “The invisible things of God are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made…” Romans 1:20. Therefore Scripture says those who retain the tree of life are blessed: “She is a tree of life to them who lay hold on her, and he that shall retain her is blessed.” Provrbs 3:18. Thus, the devotion to the Holy Rosary and repetitious prayer. Blessed is the man who is devoted to Mary most holy, praying her rosary each day and wearing her brown scapular always.

Jesus condemned the wrong kind of repetitious prayer, but recommended repetitious prayer in other places, even curing the blind man who kept praying, “Jesus! Son of David, have mercy on me! And Jesus himself prayed repetitiously in the Garden, St. Matt. 26:44. “He prayed the third time, saying the self-same word.” Drbo.org. The continuous knocking on the door of the man to his friend asking for three loaves of bread. The man does not want to get up in the middle of the night, but Jesus said if he keeps on knocking, the man will finally give him what he wants, St. Luke 11:5-8.

The third part of the Hail Mary we ask for her intercessory prayer with her Son. This part was enjoined on us by the Church in 430 by the Council of Ephesus. Therefore, the Hail Mary is from God. The angel sent by God utters the first part; Elizabeth filled with the Holy Ghost utters the second part; and the Church, which is “the pillar and ground of truth,” 1 Tim. 3:15, adds the third part. So why do we go to Jesus through Mary? Because, as St. Louis de Montfort taught, “We go to Jesus through Mary because that is the way He came to us, and He said, “As I have given you an example, so do you also.” St. John 13:15. St. Alphonsus de Liguori said, “Whoever wishes to find the fruit must find the tree. Whoever wishes to find Jesus must find Mary. “And going in, they found the Child with Mary his mother.” St. Matthew 2:11.

In the beginning of Genesis we see the serpent, the old devil overcoming a woman in the Garden, and by means of her the whole human race fell when she gave Adam the apple to eat. Therefore God put a curse on the devil that one day a woman would overcome him and crush his proud head: “And the Lord God said to the serpent: Because thou hast done this thing, thou art cursed… I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and thy seed and her seed: she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel,” 3:14-15. Thus, the devil has a great fear of Mary because she crushes his head for those who call upon her. She is the woman spoken of in Scripture that is terrible as an army in battle array: “Who is she that cometh forth as the morning rising, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army set in array?” Canticles (Solomon) 6:9. The children of Mary love the rosary and the Hail Mary. St. Louis de Montfort said, ”I have no better way of knowing if a man is for God than if he likes to say the Hail Mary and the rosary.” The most devoted of her children you will find wear the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and the Miraculous Medal, both of which have been known for countless miracles and healings. For example, IMPRESSIVE STORIES OF THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL, MotherofGodlibrary.org/2019/12. One little boy, 4 years old, had a medal placed on him by his mother for protection. One day on their farm, he told his mother, “Mom, I’m going outside!” and she said, “Wait a minute and I’ll go with you!” He ran on out and she put some dishes away and ran out quickly, but he had already disappeared. They had a pond close by, and worried, she quickly ran to the pond. He had already fell into the pond and was about to drown, and a man coming by, had saved his life in the nick of time. So grateful was the mother she fixed the man a meal, took the medal off her son, and asked the man to always wear it and say a prayer. Many years later the man had fallen into sin but always wore the medal, and at death’s door, he believed there was no hope to save his soul. In another country, he would not hear a priest, until the lady told him there was one here from his country. “There is?” he asked. And she said, “Yes.” So he finally consented but after speaking with the priest, still would not confess his sins, and rolled over, his back to the priest. The priest noticed something around his neck and said, “What’s that you’re wearing?” and he told him the story about the medal and saving the little boy’s life. The priest eyes began running with tears and he told the man, “That little boy you saved that day was me, and God has sent me here to help you save your soul.” The man was deeply touched, confessed his sins, and died in peace.” Another wonderful example of how Mary helps her children to be reconciled to God, and save their souls. “I am become in his presence as one finding peace.” Canticles (Solomon) 8:10. St. Alphonsus says these words apply to Mary, reconciling her children back to God.

Mary is the mother of all those who bear the name of Christian, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. What is an easy way to show Mary is the mother of all Christians? Well, you will need Psalm 2:9, where the Father is speaking of His Son who “will rule them with a rod of iron,” to substantiate Apocalypse 12:5 where it says, “He will rule them with a rod of iron.” So we know the Son she is about to give birth to is Jesus Christ, therefore the woman can be no other than the Blessed Virgin Mary. We see a great conflict between the woman and the dragon, that old serpent the devil; as was predicted in Genesis 3:15. The child is taken up to heaven, and the woman is taken out in the desert protected by God, so the dragon is angry with the woman, and Scripture says, “And the dragon was angry against the woman: and went to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” 12:17, or Revelation 12:17. We are the seed of the woman, who is Mary, we who have the testimony of Jesus Christ, and keep the commandments of God. Therefore, Mary is our spiritual Mother. Could it be any plainer?

St. Paul taught that Christ is the head of the Church, and the Church is his body, Eph. 1:22-23, and those united to it are the members, 5:30. St. Louis also taught that the Holy Ghost used Mary to form the head, Jesus Christ in her womb; and He also uses her in a spiritual manner to form the body and members into other Christs. “He who wishes to have the operation of the Holy Ghost, must have the divine Mary, who makes him fertile and fruit-bearing.” Thus, Mary can say more than St. Paul, “I am in labour again, until Christ be formed in you.” Gal. 4:19. The dragon is making war with us, and we need the protection of our Blessed Mother.

Mary is also referred to as the City of God, because Our Lord dwelt in her womb for nine months, and she was his tabernacle. He filled her with so much grace it was called “a stream of the river,” and He sanctified her. “The stream of the river maketh the city of God joyful; the Most High hath sanctified his own tabernacle. “ Psalm 45:5. Psalm 47:2 God predicts He is to be exceedingly praised in her: “Great is the Lord, and exceedingly to be praised in the city of our God, in his holy mountain.” This is what we do each time we pray the Hail Mary and the rosary, and these things bring great protection to us. A certain platoon of airplane pilots were all taught to pray the rosary by their commander before they went out to fight. Even the non-Catholic men were praying with him. Before they went out, he gave them all a rosary and said, “Men, I promise you, if you will keep this rosary with you and say it every day, we will all get back home to Canada.” Which they did, and one of the men, a non-Catholic told a nun in 1952 their story, and he said it was noted, “Ours was the only platoon that never lost a plane, nor never lost a man!” Mary’s second promise of her 15 promises she gave was wonderfully fulfilled, “I promise my special protection, and the greatest graces to all those who pray my rosary.” Other powerful stories on the protection of those who pray the rosary, peoples and nations: The Importance of the Family Rosary and The Power of the Rosary, https://www.olrl.org/pray/.

The Hail Mary is a powerful prayer. Blessed Alan dela Roche said, “At the words, Hail Mary, Satan flies, and hell trembles.” Fr. Gabriel Amorth,an exorcist, said he had a colleague who heard the devil say in an exorcism, “Every Hail Mary is like a blow on my head. If Christians only knew how powerful the rosary is, it would be my end.” That’s why the devil always attacks the rosary, and makes people not want to say it. Joseph Scheider, the pro-life champion, R.I.P., said one time, “The abortionists have admitted that if only one person is outside a clinic praying the rosary, it is chaos inside.” Therefore, if we are not saying the Hail Mary and Rosary every day, let us begin to do so today. It is extremely urgent! Our Blessed Mother at Fatima insisted we pray it every day, saying it would save souls and bring peace in the world, but she also warned that if we did not listen to her and ignored her requests, many terrible evils would come upon us. “If my requests are not heard, Russia will spread her errors throughout the world, provoking wars and persecutions against the Church. The Holy Father will have much to suffer, and, get this, various ENTIRE NATIONS WILL BE ANNIHILATED.” Is that what we want? We did not listen, and the second world war was upon us just 21 years later. Do you not see the seriousness of the consequences if we do not do what she has asked of us? If I were a priest, I would always be reaching on the rosary and Fatima.
