  1. Mary Your Spiritual Mother

“Son, behold your mother.” St. John 19:27. If you are a Christian and consider yourself a brother or sister in Christ, “the firstborn of many brethren,” Rom. 8:29, then Mary is your spiritual mother. St. Paul tells the Ephesians that “Christ is the head of the church, which is his body.” 1:22,23. And he says we are “members of his body.” 5:30. St. Louis de Montfort explains it this way. “This man and that man were born in her.” Ps. 86:5. “According to some of the Fathers of the Church the first man born in her was Jesus the Godman. The second man is mere man born spiritually. When a woman is forming a child in her womb, She forms the head, the body and the members all in one. She is the mother of the whole person, not just part of it. Therefore, Mary is mother not only of Christ the head, but also of his body the Church and its members.” I am paraphrasing his quote somewhat. You can find the whole quote in his work, True Devotion to Mary, #32, and I highly encourage you to read that book. He explains Mary’s place in the economy of salvation in a way you’ve never understood before, and you will see he is right. King David wrote the Psalms. He was inspired by God. He was very enlightened in the divine mysteries. He foresaw that he would be a spiritual child of Mary. He wrote: “O Lord, for I am thy servant: I am thy servant, and the son of thy handmaid….” Ps 115: 16. Another place he says, “Save the son of Thy handmaid.” 85:16. Who was this handmaid? It was the Blessed Virgin when she consented to the angel to become the Mother of God. “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to Thy word. St. Luke 1:38.
So then, we are the spiritual seed of Mary. She is our heavenly mother. In Apocalypse (Rev.)Chap. 12 the woman in heaven is giving birth to her child. We know this woman is Mary because her Son is Jesus, who “will rule them with an iron rod.”vs.5. In Ps. 2:9 the Father is speaking to His Son and He says to him,” Thou shalt rule them with an iron rod.” The dragon in chapter 12 waits in vain to devour the child, and his efforts against the woman are futile as well. “And the dragon was angry against the woman: and went to make war with the rest of her seed, who keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Vs. 17. Here then is your proof if you are a Christian and keep the commandments of God that Mary is your spiritual mother and you are her spiritual seed the demon is making war against. Notice too, that he is making war with you, not just a little fight. We must fight manfully, to the death if need be.
Our Blessed Mother reaffirms this motherhood to St. Juan Diego in her appearance to him in 1531. “Am I not Your mother…” she says. Again, when Jesus and Mary appeared to Sr. Lucy of Fatima in 1925, Mary”s heart encircled with thorns, Jesus said, ”Have pity on the heart of your most holy Mother, pierced by the sins of ungrateful men…” Note too, Jesus says to Sr. Lucy, “your mother,” not “My mother.” Therefore, we are bound to honor the Blessed Mother for two reasons, 1) Because she is the mother of Christ our Saviour; 2) because she is also our mother. The 2nd commandment applies not only to our earthly parents but to our heavenly parents as well. And in the natural order children not only run to their father when in need, but also to their mother. And oftentimes, more so to the mother than the father. Therefore, the protestants who do not understand any of these things are leaving out an important link in the family. She is their mother and they are ignoring her. Jesus entrusted himself to Mary. He had no need of her but, He chose to make use of her. And He told us to follow His example. Therefore, if He entrusted Himself to Mary, then we her other children should as well, following his example , “As I have given you an example, so do you also.” St. John 13:15. In the order of nature, a father provides for the family, but how much of the rearing of the children is in the hands of the mother.
The saints teach, according to Scripture, that all graces pass from the Father, through Jesus, and through Mary. Jesus came into the world through her; the first graces of the Incarnation of the Word were given through Mary’s greeting to Elizabeth, her being filled with the Holy Ghost, St. Luke 1:41; St. John the Baptist being filled with the Holy Ghost even from his mother’s womb, vs.15; and Jesus’ first public miracle at Cana, worked through her intercession, even though his hour had not yet come.” St. John 2:1-11.
Jesus said we would judge a tree by its fruit. If we consider who Jesus was, the fruit of life and the Son of God, what kind of tree must Mary have been, who brought him forth? What must have been the holiness of the woman that God had chosen to be the mother of His Son? What must have been the holiness of her Whom the Son chose to be his mother? What must have been the holiness of her whom the Holy Ghost chose as His spouse? Do you think God would choose a tainted vessel by which to come into the world? Scripture says: “Wisdom does not dwell in a malicious soul, nor a body subject to sins.” Wisdom 1:4. Also, St. Alphonsus, quoting Hebrews, : “For it was fitting that we should have such a High priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners…” 7:26 says, “How can we say he was separated from sinners, if his own mother was a sinner?” Is it not fitting that this undefiled priest not also have an undefiled mother?
Do you believe in intercessory prayer? Then why do you not believe in the intercessory prayer of your Mother in heaven? Do you think, sinners as we are, that we can do better approaching Jesus with our tainted prayers, than Mary praying for us who never sinned? “For one is my dove, my perfect one is but one. The daughters saw her, and declared her most blessed.” Cant. 6:8. Scripture says she was perfect, “My perfect one.” It’s speaking of a woman. In St. John’s gospel he speaks of Jesus as being “full of grace.” 1:14. Would you not say then that Jesus was without sin if He was “full of grace?” Well, wouldn’t the same be true of Mary when the angel saluted her as “full of grace?” St. Luke 1:28
It is not without reason that Scripture tells us to salute Mary. “Salute Mary who hath labored much among you.” Rom. 16:6. We do this when we salute her with the Hail Mary, and then we ask her to pray for us her children, sinners that we are. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary , Mother of God, pray for us sinners now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.
St. Bridget once had a vision of Jesus and Mary in heaven. She heard Jesus say to His mother, “Ask of me whatever you will, and I will refuse you nothing, for while you were on earth, you refused me nothing.” St. Alphonsus said that Jesus so loves His mother that if all the saints and angels in heaven asked for a favor, and His blessed Mother asked for an opposite one, He would grant the favor of His mother before theirs. Yet, how many people say, “I don’t need Mary. I go straight to Jesus.” While, with all their sins daily, they forget that although Jesus is a merciful judge, he is also a just one. “Just Father, the world has not known Thee.” St. John 17:25. And each sin that we commit is an offense against God. Now, if you offended an earthly judge as many times as you offend Jesus, would you not want a good lawyer? Mary is like a spiritual lawyer for us. Jesus may not hear our prayers for us because we have offended him too much, but He will hear the prayers of His blessed Mother.
If we wish to have abundant blessings from God, we should honor Mary, “the ark of his testament.” Apoc.11:19. In the Old Testament, God blessed the house of Obededom, because the ark of the Lord was there, “And the ark of the Lord abode in the house of Obededom the Gethite three months: and the Lord blessed Obededom, and all his household.” 2 Kings (Samuel) 6:10-12. Likewise, Mary was with Elizabeth three months, and God greatly enriched their home because of it. Let us do likewise.
“He who honoureth his mother is as one who layeth up a treasure.” Ecclesiasticus 3:5. If we honor Christ’s mother and our own, we lay up treasures of grace, and a great reward in heaven. In the 10th promise of the rosary it says, “ The true children of my Rosary will enjoy great glory in Heaven.” Unfortunate it is though that many lukewarm and sinful Catholics have little or no devotion to their mother in heaven. They never say the rosary, and some never or seldom even say the Hail Mary. They crucify her Son and anger the mother. Ecclesiasticus 3:18 “Of what an evil fame is he that forsaketh his father: and he is cursed of God that angereth his mother.”
Did Mary our Mother suffer the pains of labor for her children? Yes. If St. Paul could say, “My little children of whom I am in labor again, until Christ be formed in you.” Gal:.4:19, how much more Mary could say the same thing. In giving birth to the Child Jesus, who is “head over all the body, which is his church,” Eph. 1:22,23, Mary suffered no pain, because she was sinless and not subject to the curse of Eve, and her child was sinless. Scripture speaks of her perfection in Canticles(Song of Songs), “For one is my dove, my perfect one is but one…The daughters saw her and declared her most blessed.” 6:8. A sinless child who was God would have a sinless mother, for He would not come into the world in a contaminated vessel. In The Mystical City of God, it says Jesus miraculously freed himself in the womb and passed through Mary as light through a window, not violating the virginal chamber. Mary not only did not suffer pain, but she was on her knees and experienced great joy when He was born. But in Revelation chapter 12 it says she was in great travail. But this is a mystical vision of St. John, representing her giving birth to Christ and His whole Church. This is because she was not only giving birth to the head but also to the body and members of Christ as well. This is explained by St. Louis de Montfort in True Devotion to Mary, that we are spiritually hidden in Mary’s womb, and she is laboring to bring us to the eternal light of heaven.
Were her sufferings great? Very much so. Scripture says of her, From Lamentations 2:13 , “To what shall I compare thee? or to what shall I liken thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? to what shall I equal thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Sion? for great as the sea is thy destruction: who shall heal thee?” In The Mystical City of God, it says she prayed to God, if she couldn’t die in Jesus’ place, that He would allow her to suffer His Passion with him, and God heard her prayer. Can you imagine what it would be like to see your child scourged top to bottom, one terrible mass of bleeding wounds; to see him crowned with thorns, beaten and struck in the face; to see him carry that heavy cross about a half mile on his bleeding shoulders, falling several times along the way, being beaten by the soldiers because He wasn’t going fast enough, then watching the soldiers drive those big nails in his hands and feet, and standing at the cross for 3 hours to watch him die? She suffered all that with Jesus, for you, and for me. The blessed Mother would often times shed bitter tears to see the sufferings Jesus would endure for sinners, and to see so many of them lost despite all His sufferings, because the enemy is prevailing over so many souls. “Therefore do I weep, and my eyes run down with water: because the comforter, the relief of my soul, is far from me: my children are desolate because the enemy hath prevailed.” Lamentations 1:16. Sometimes it says she would even shed tears of blood, her anguish was so great. This was when she was still alive on earth, weeping for her children. Yes, she is truly our spiritual mother, and these are her labor pains for us. Now, in our time, there are reportings of Jesus and Mary weeping all over the world because our sins are reaching phenomenal proportions. See video: http://bit.ly/11Bci3h. This is why we are seeing natural disasters, wars and diseases all over the world. All these things are Biblical. Read Deuteronomy chapter 28 for example, God’s blessings for doing good; his curses for doing evil.
Unfortunate also are our protestant brethren, who, because of private interpretation of Scripture, which never leads to the full truth, do not even know they have a heavenly mother. “No prophecy of scripture is made by private interpretation.” 2 St. Peter 1:20. Like Constantine, whose mother was St. Helena, because he separated from her as a child, did not even know his own mother. His father was a pagan, and Constantine fought many battles with his father; then given orders to go to Rome. While there he met his mother and he didn’t even know her. But Constantine was a just man, following the law of God in his heart, and when he witnessed the Christians being thrown to the lions, wished to have no part in it, even saving one of the little boys from the lion, killing it with his sword. But because he was just though not yet a Christian, God gave him a sign of the cross in the sky saying, “In this sign thou shalt conquer.” Which he did under great odds, and finally had the happiness of being reunited with his mother. It was he who restored freedom to the Christians to worship as they ought, and it was his good , saintly mother who found the true cross later on. But if our dearly beloved separated brethren will do their homework, educate themselves on the blessed Mother by reading good holy books such as True Devotion to Mary by St. Louis de Montfort, The Glories of Mary by St. Alphonsus de Liguori, The Mystical City of God by Venerable Mary of Agreda, Spain and others, they will come to realize the truth of Mary’s motherhood. Also, they should read The Secret of the Rosary by St. Louis de Montfort to understand the importance of the rosary, and that it was sent from heaven to convert and sanctify souls.
They have the unhappy notion that to honor the mother dishonors the Son. Nothing could be further from the truth. He who honors the mother honors the Son, just as he who praises a work of art honors the artist who painted it. Jesus said, “He who honors not the Son, honors not the Father, who sent him.” St. John 5:23. If we dishonor the Son, that redounds back on the Father who sent him. And if we dishonor the Father, the Son likewise is offended. Would there be any difference with the Son and the Mother? And if someone came into your house and dishonored your Mother, speaking negatively of her, would you not be offended and ready to cast them out, if they didn’t apologize? On the other hand, if they came in and spoke well of her, would you not be pleased? Jesus is not displeased how so ever much we praise his mother with the Hail Mary in the rosary. Have you ever noticed that each time we praise her, we praise him as well? “Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.” Why do we bless Mary first? This is how the Holy Ghost set it up. When Mary entered and greeted Elizabeth, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost. Notice , she didn’t just receive a little of the Holy Ghost, she was filled with the Holy Ghost, and the first words out of her mouth were, “blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.” St. Luke 1:41-42. Do you have the Holy Ghost? Do you bless Mary with the Hail Mary and the rosary? Why did she bless Mary first, and Jesus second? “Because,” as St. Louis says, “In order to bless Jesus more perfectly, we begin by blessing his mother.”
Therefore, I would urge all who call themselves Christian to begin to pray the rosary every day. This is the will of God. The rosary was given to us from heaven in 1216 to St. Dominic in a vision. She came to Fatima, Portugal in 1917 to three little children and insisted in every apparition that we pray the rosary every day. Wear the Brown Scapular of Our lady of Mt. Carmel, which is a spiritual garment she gives her children. Just as in the order of nature, she wove a seamless garment for Jesus, her firstborn, she has also given us a spiritual garment for her other children. The Germans call it a ”grace garment.” She asks us to help our brothers and sisters who are in danger of hellfire by praying and making sacrifices for them. “Many souls go to hell because they have no one to pray and make sacrifices for them.” “Many souls,” she said. She actually showed the children a vision of hell where they saw a great number of damned angels and lost souls in hell. Just think, a quadrillion million years they will be burning in the fires of hell, and their sufferings will never end. Never! Seventy thousand people in Portugal witnessed a great miracle of the sun which confirmed the events. It has been documented. The miracle of the sun at Fatima is as much of a fact as the sinking of the Titanic!
Now, a little about the rosary. We begin by making an Act of Faith in the Holy Trinity, in the incarnation of Christ, his death and the principal mysteries of our faith by reciting the Apostles Creed. The Creed the Apostles formulated before they went out to preach, (The Mystical City of God). We pray the Lord’s prayer and 3 Hail Marys for an increase of faith, hope, and charity followed by the Glory Be and the O My Jesus prayer. Then we begin the mysteries of Our Lord’s life, meditating on them and praying for the grace to imitate his and his mother’s virtues exemplified in the mysteries. Now I ask you, Is it not a good thing to express our faith in God, to praise him, to ask him for graces and strive to imitate the virtues of His Son? We do this constantly in the rosary. To meditate on his life? “In my meditation a fire will flame out.” Psalm 38:4. St. John gives us a summary of the rosary mysteries in his first Gospel, chapter 1. “He came unto his own,” the Joyful Mysteries; “His own received him not,” the Sorrowful Mysteries; “but to all who did receive him, he gave the power to be the sons of God,” the Glorious Mysteries. Verses 11 and 12. And it is also interesting that they count the fish and number them in St. John’s Gospel at the end, 21:11, one hundred fifty-three; the same number as the number of Hail Marys in the entire rosary, 153. St. John knew about the rosary.
ROSARY SAVES A MAN’S LIFE ON SEPTEMBER 11TH: A man from New York who had fallen away from the Catholic Church and not gone to confession in years was met at a TFP Fatima presentation given by America Needs Fatima Custodian, Jose Ferraz. After the visit, the New Yorker took home a rosary and rosary guide and started praying it and going to the sacraments again. Months later, on September 11th, 2001, he was in the world trade center at the very moment when the terrorist attack took place.
Seeing the fireball and smoke from the crash, the man fled his office and tried running down the stairs to safety. However, he met a big obstacle. The fire doors had locked and he was trapped in the stairwell, listening to the screams of burning people who were still inside the building, unable to escape death. It was awful…horrific. Any attempt to pry open the fire doors with bare hands would be futile. With Our Lady’s help, instead of panicking, he felt calm. He grabbed his rosary and started praying to the Blessed Mother for help. And within minutes, firemen reached his floor, broke down the fire doors and set him free. He ran downstairs to safety, his prayers answered thanks to the power of the Most Holy Rosary. The Blessed Mother says, “I promise my special protection and the greatest graces to all those who shall recite the Rosary.” # 2. Do you not see how powerful the rosary is? Sr. Lucy, one of the Fatima children said, “Our Lady will protect her dear ones.”
